Sexual health checks and STI testing

A sexual health check is a normal GP appointment. Your doctor asks a few questions about your sexual history, arranges the right tests, and talks through prevention. Most STI screening is a urine sample, a self-collected swab and a blood test. Your GP will give you a pathology request to take to the nearest collection centre; the Australian Clinical Labs centre inside our Rye clinic is one option.

When should I get tested?

After a new partner, if a partner has tested positive, if you have symptoms such as discharge, pain or sores, or as a yearly routine if you are sexually active. Some infections take a few weeks to show up, so your GP may ask you to repeat a test.

How long do results take, and are they confidential?

Most results are back within two to five days. Your GP will contact you if anything needs treatment and can do a results appointment by phone. Results are part of your confidential medical record and are not shared without your consent, apart from the anonymous notification of some infections required by public health law.

Cervical screening

The Cervical Screening Test is due every five years from age 25 to 74. You can self-collect a vaginal swab in private at the clinic or have your GP collect the sample; both are equally accurate. If you would prefer a female doctor, Dr Noopur and Dr Baghbanmanesh consult at our Rye clinic.

Contraception

Your GP will help you choose the method that suits you: the pill, the contraceptive implant, hormonal or copper IUDs, or emergency contraception.

IUD insertion and removal

An IUD is a small device placed in the uterus that provides contraception for five to ten years depending on the type. Insertion takes about 15 minutes in our treatment room. Your GP will discuss pain relief with you beforehand and will tell you if a pelvic ultrasound is recommended first. Removal is quick and can be done at any appointment.

Contraceptive implant insertion and removal

The contraceptive implant is a small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm under local anaesthetic. It lasts three years and can be removed at any time.

Emergency contraception

If you need emergency contraception, book the earliest appointment available and tell reception it is urgent.

Pre-pregnancy planning and antenatal care

A pre-pregnancy appointment covers your health, vaccinations, folate, any medicines you take, and the checks worth doing before you conceive. Once you are pregnant, our GPs provide shared antenatal care.

Medical termination of pregnancy

Medical termination of pregnancy is not available at Red Hill Family Clinic at present. It is provided by our doctors at our sister clinic, Rye Family Clinic. You can book directly at Rye online, or our reception will arrange it for you. The service is confidential and non-judgemental.

Fees

Sexual health checks and contraception appointments are billed as standard or long consultations, with bulk billing for eligible patients across all our consulting hours. IUD and implant insertion and removal carry procedure fees; please ask reception for current fees. Pathology for STI testing is bulk billed by the laboratory.

Common questions

Do I need a referral?

No. Book directly with either of our GPs.

Can men have a sexual health check here?

Yes. Sexual health checks, STI testing and treatment are available to everyone.

Can I see a female doctor?

Not at Red Hill at present. Female GPs consult at our Rye clinic and can be booked online.

How much does an STI test cost?

The appointment is billed as a standard consultation, bulk billed for eligible patients, and the tests themselves are bulk billed, so for many patients there is no out-of-pocket cost.
